About the Program
  • Develop an understanding of the domain.
  • Increase analytical skills to evaluate clinical cases and be able to review suitable treatment plans. 
  • Increase the understanding of the method of accessing the optical anomalies. 
  • Help students practice referral skills and share patient care.
  • Make students capable enough to render therapeutic communication and counseling effectively.
  • A graduate in Bachelor of Optometry course is expected to serve as a primary eye care practitioner and contribute to the success of this industry. 
Course Duration

A 4 (3+1) years full time professional undergraduate course, under the aegis of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT).

Course Eligibility

Passed/ appeared/ due-to-appear in 2025 at Higher Secondary Examination in the General or Vocational Stream under the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent examination from a recognised Board.

Course Highlights

  •  To acquire knowledge on ocular structures, its functions and pathological changes.
  •  To carry out ophthalmic investigations. 
  • To impart knowledge with regard to common eye diseases. 
  • To impart knowledge on treatment modalities from the perspective of counselling. 
  • To acquire knowledge about the referral guidelines for ocular and systemic conditions. 
  • Be able to correct refractive error and provide spectacle prescription.
  • Be able to fit, evaluate, prescribe and dispense contact lenses for refractive correction and other ocular conditions.
  • Be able to assess the low vision and provide comprehensive low vision care.

After taking a Bachelor degree, student can opt for M.Optom, M.Phil, and follow it up with a Ph.D. India and Abroad.

Message from HOD

Optometrists are the first in the line of contact in eye care which makes their significance in healthcare crucial. In this 4 year undergraduate course in Optometry we not only provide students with academic in-depth knowledge in vision science, ophthalmic science, and comprehensive eye care studies but also propel them to the forefront in a career in Eye Care eminence.With a focus on skill based practical training in state of the art optical laboratories and clinical experiences. Through this transformative educational journey, our top-notch professionally equipped faculties motivate them to become worthy and compassionate leaders in Eye care. After successful completion of the course our students have a plethora of opportunities in employability- 

  • They can work as optometrists, providing primary eye care services such as vision testing, prescribing corrective lenses, and detecting eye diseases.
  • They can hold positions like that of an optical store manager in optical stores, overseeing day-to-day operations, managing staff, and ensuring the quality of eyewear products.
  • They may choose to specialize in Contact Lens and flourish in both corrective and beauty eye care
